“This is my least favorite part of any case,” Brock grumbled as he sifted through a bunch of financial records. “If I wanted to become an accountant then I wouldn’t have joined the Bureau, would I?”

Olivia smirked as she examined the paper in her hand. She, on the other hand, didn’t mind this kind of work. They were searching through Finlay Clarke’s financial records, looking for anything strange that might help them in the case. Now that he was dead, the best they could hope for was a breakthrough in the things he’d left behind. She found the work to be easy, but also rewarding. There was no creative thought needed when trawling someone’s bank account, looking for patterns and logic. It allowed her to take a step back from all the madness for a while.

“You can leave it to me if you want. You can find something else to do.”

“Nah. Then who would keep you entertained? Besides, this is so boring that it might actually send me to sleep. Then I might actually get some shut-eye.”

Olivia offered Brock a sympathetic smile. She knew that he was usually out like a light the second his head hit the pillow, but she sensed that, like her, he was struggling to nod off with a serial killer on the loose. It was impossible not to feel uneasy, especially since they thought they’d caught the killer for a brief moment.

And loose end after loose end seemed to be following them around. After scouting out the address that Jenny had sent them to, they found nothing but an empty house covered in dust, with no trace of blood or gore anywhere on the property. The house was allegedly still owned by the family of a man who had been dead for three years, but none of them had been in Beacon Hill for years. In other words, the house had been abandoned, but it was clear to Olivia that someone had been using it for their own means.

They hadn’t gotten very far in trying to identify who the woman Jenny saw in the house might be, either. They’d been trawling missing persons reports for hours, looking for a woman with blonde hair and a beauty mark, but none of the descriptions matched anyone who had been reported missing in the area. Olivia thought there were only two likely explanations. Either the woman was a close friend of the killers before her death, and they were the only people likely to report her missing.

Or Jenny had lied to them.

But there was something that Olivia couldn’t help coming back to as she looked through Finlay’s bank statements. The same monthly transaction cropped up again and again, the same as Freedom or The Quake or Sigils. But this time, there were two differences: first, the organization this time around was called Tenth. And second, not only had Finlay made payments to Tenth on several occasions, but he had also received payouts from Freedom several times—in the amount of thirteen hundred and thirteen dollars.
